As well as this awesome list of Top 10 kitchen tools for your Dad, we’ve searched for foodie gifts that will take you as far away as possible from socks, hankies and soaps on ropes.

1. Surprise your Dad with breakfast in bed (old-fashioned flapjacks or eggs benedict could be the winner you are after). If the weather holds out, pack your family a picnic and head off in search of some winter sun.
2. A stash of biltong or a biltong maker. Often it’s the simple things in life that make all the difference. Treat your Dad with a stash of biltong and, if you’re feeling generous, partner it with the ultimate tool for any biltong lover: the biltong king.
3. A bottle or two of wine. If your Dad enjoys a good glass of plonk, order him a selection of wine from Get Wine – you can even personalise the label. From R50.

4. Tickets to The Good Food and Wine Show. If you are based in the Jo’burg or Durban areas, book your Dad tickets to The Good Food and Wine Show. If the Cape Town show a few weeks ago is anything to go by, it’s worth booking your spot. The Durban festival runs from 28-31 July and the Jo’burg festival from 22-25 September. From R60.

5.  A sushi course or sushi maker. Love sushi? Enrol your Dad on a course and maybe he’ll make you some. There are plenty of courses around the country; two you might like to try include Miya’s in Johannesburg and Nobu in Cape Town. Or you can buy him this awesome sushi maker and give it a go at home. From R230.
6. A cooking course at Foodiction in Jo’burg. Pick a cooking class from Foodiction’s wide selection. Based in Bryanston, they offer all sorts of courses from ‘just for blokes’ to beginner’s baking sessions. From R450.

7. Cheese-making course. Head to Plettenberg Bay with your Dad and give cheese making a go. After two days you will be able to make fromage frais, feta and gouda. You may regret it though if your kitchen starts to pong. From R180o.

It’s doesn’t come cheap at R1950 but this does include two full-days of expert tuition from Neil Jewell, two glorious lunches and Bread & Wine cookbook. The course covers all the basics and so much more from how to break-down the carcass of a pig and the nuances of dry curing to how to make your own sausages and build an indoor smoker.
9. A cooking course in the Karoo. Let your Dad be totally inspired by the courses at African Relish in the Karoo. There are all sorts of three-day courses on offer from a weekend upping the ante on the curry front with Reza Mahammad to a course led by top chef Reuben Riffel. Courses range from R2950 to R4950 and include at least two nights of accommodation, three days of tuition and all meals.

10. Learn more about wine. If you think your Dad may be quite the wine connoisseur, consider enrolling him in a wine course. There are some great wine courses all over the country.
