Product Info
Keen for a creamy accompaniment to your morning muesli or a smoothie snack? This yoghurt maker works as an incubator which allows you to create your own homemade yoghurt with minimal effort. Plus, if you know what you are putting into your yoghurt, you can avoid unnecessary preservatives and added sugar, so it’s a healthier option too.
- Yoghurt maker base and lid, with seven separate jars which hold 150ml each
- Features include on/off switch with pilot light, transparent lid and memory dial
Instructions:
- Simply add 1 to 2 teaspoons of natural yoghurt (without sugar, fruit or fruit juice) to each of the glass jars. Dry culture can be used instead of fresh yoghurt, just follow the instructions on the packet
- Slowly heat the required amount of milk to 90°C and then let it cool to roughly 30°C before evenly distributing it into the jars
- Stir the milk and the yoghurt together in each jar, attach the lids, and put the jars into the machine
- Switch on and leave for five to six hours and when ready, move each jar to the fridge to cool
Tips:
- Sterilised or UHT milk will give the best results
- If cold milk (at fridge temperature) is used, it will take eight to nine hours to make yoghurt
- Once you have made your first batch of yoghurt, reserve the required amount for your next batch
- After three or four makings the yoghurt may become watery, it is then time to restart the process with fresh yoghurt
- If you wish to make fruit yoghurt, add the fruit to the warm yoghurt before you transfer the jars to the fridge to cool

My first two attempts were a complete flop, but when I added a bit of milk powder the yoghurt was perfect. Fun to try different flavors! The only thing that's silly is that it does not have a timer.

It's the easiest thing in the world to use, it takes less than a minute to put together. I use UHT milk, the jars take exactly one litre between them, and I leave it overnight. Perfect every time.

Excellent yoghurt

Using the kit was simple and quick and results were great: we did a little cheat and tried two methods for starters one using double thick creamy yoghurt and one with the probiotics one can get anywhere. In both cases the milk was UHT full cream milk. It was delicious but the one made from double thick creamy yoghurt was the best!

Love love this yoghurt maker. Also used milk powder (1 tsp) per jar and good quality double cream starter yoghurt. Wow the resulting yoghurt was delicious and thick and creamy! Amazing product!

It took a little experimentation to get it right, but what tasty yoghurt I make now.
I use whole Jersey milk, which I heat to 90 degrees, and allow to cool, in the fridge, to 30 deg. (You can use a thermometer for complete accuracy, but 90 is the point where the milk starts bubbling, and 30 is more or less body temperature.)
Once the milk has cooled, whisk in about 50ml plain yoghurt (I used unsweetened double cream), add vanilla if you like, pour the mixture into the jars, screw the lids on, put the jars into the yoghurt maker, close its lid, switch on, note the time and leave it to do 'magic'.
As the 'timer' on the lid is just a position you set yourself, I set an alarm on my cell phone to remind me. Now this is the part where I had to make adjustments. The instructions said 5 to 6 hours; I find 4 is quite sufficient - maybe longer will be needed in the winter. When it is done put the jars into the fridge, and enjoy when cool.
Note that the yoghurt thickens during cooling. Altogether a super product and the yoghurt got the approval of a previously yoghurt-hating child! Read more

I love this yoghurt maker and use it all the time. The yoghurt really is so much better than storebought, and cheaper too. My kids love having their own individual jars and they mix it with honey or fruit purees. I don't mind the lack of timer so much, but I do think it would be better if the lid fitted on tighter, so that the "time" you set it to doesn't get accidentally moved.

I love this product. So simple and easy to use, and I've bought a set of spare pots to use as well - we go through a LOT of yoghurt! I use a litre of UHT milk, 4Tbs milk powder for extra thickness, 4Tbs plain yoghurt starter, overnight in the incubator - works like a bomb every time.

Love this Yoghurt Maker, as we are banting and cannot find double cream full fat yoghurt. So easy now, I just make my own. Instructions are very clear and easy to use.

I bought this yoghurt maker and was a little bit skeptical about the results I would get. Adding yogurt to milk to make yoghurt seemed a little like crazy talk. But it really worked!
I made coconut yoghurt, and after I drained the whey from my curd, it wasn't as solid as I would have wanted it to be, but it sure was delicious! I can't see myself going back to the store to buy yoghurt again any time soon! Read more

I have made loads of good yoghurt in a flask, but this appliance allows for the perfect temperature to be maintained. Even the first time I used it, made the thickest, tastiest yoghurt I have ever made. My only criticism would be that it needs to have a timer to switch it off when the yoghurt is done.

I've tried making yoghurt - prior to buying this yoghurt maker - and my efforts failed miserably! However, I made my first batch, using the machine, last night. We ate it (with fruit) this morning and it was great. Next time I'll just add a little sweetener and a touch of vanilla, too.

I never would have seen myself as a 'home yoghurt' person, but this system is so easy and really does work well. Some people have commented that a timer would have been useful, and I agree. But it still works fine, and is easy enough to use without a timer (it's not that critical - just run it overnight and turn it off in the morning). For a batch of 7 small jars of yoghurt, you use 1 L of UHT milk (room temperature). Really a 'no mess, no fuss' effort! I can't believe I didn't start doing this sooner. It's also very handy to buy an extra set of jars (8 jars in a box). You just use some plain yoghurt as a starter (or you can buy freeze-dried yoghurt cultures at a health shop), and add the milk. Some people recommend adding a bit of milk powder to make it creamier, and that also works well. Read more

I owned one many years ago and now realise how much I missed having one. Always something delicious in the fridge to eat. Use mine in baking and in food. Very easy to use and simple instructions. Did not even need extra powdered milk but am going to try almond powder to change flavours. Love mine!

I took ages to decide if I wanted to buy this. A great friend asked incredulously whether I was mad adding to my to do list. I grew up with my mom making her own yoghurt so decided to go ahead and buy the yoghurt maker. I am delighted I did. My family and I much prefer the taste of homemade yoghurt to shop bought. My husband eats it plain and me and the children put a spoon of Bonne Maman jam and a spoon of toasted almonds. Once you have the hang of it, it's easy peasy. Organic full cream milk heated to 90 degrees (once you have done this a few times you won't need a thermometer you will know what it looks like) - 7 minutes 30. Cool to 40 degrees (about 1 hour 30). One small tub of Woolies organic yoghurt. Spoon into little glass jars. Lid on and in machine for 6-7 hours (I prefer the taste of 7 hours). Straight into fridge. Enjoy cold. Divine. Read more

I read all the reviews, and decided to try my first batch half with - 1 teaspoon milk powder (per pot), and the other with only two teaspoons of yoghurt (per pot). I used long life full cream milk. Six hours and it was ready. There was no difference - both were thick and creamy. Undoubtedly - a super product, and so easy to use.

Really worthwhile having. I find it quicker to measure all the milk and yoghurt together in a jug rather than mixing in the individual jars. I also add one tsp of milk powder per jar as this makes a creamier and thicker yoghurt.

Fantastic little appliance with the cutest little glass containers! I make the most gorgeous, super healthy yogurt DAILY, for much less than what I had to pay in any shop. My boys LOVE it! I’ve previously made my own yogurt either using my slow cooker or by first heating the milk and then letting it get down to the required temperature and then pouring it into a flask to set.
The Severin Yogurt makes is so quick and easy to use. Simply mix the milk with the yogurt culture, pour into the bottles and switch and leave until ready. Perfect results every time – delicious, pure yogurt without any additives.

I tried the yogurt maker twice (once with a culture and once with the starter method) and both times were unsuccessful. I measured the temperature in the yogurt maker and it was often close to 50°C, which means that the bacteria inside will not grow and produce yogurt. Quite disappointed, as it seems like a reputable company and many reviews gave positive feedback.

The Severin Yoghurt maker is very simple to use as long as you use the right kind of base — I found full cream milk and double cream yoghurt to work the best and not milk from the big suppliers — too de creamed!
The only disappointment was it only lasted 2 years and 3 months, we felt that being a German made product it should have lasted longer, because its guarantee is 2 years. I came to rely on it so immediately bought another!! Read more

Making my own yogurt is something I've always wanted.
I tried with a starter from Parmalat full cream plain yogurt and Clover Lactose-free Milk (Orange carton).
Love it... smooth and very tasty without being overly thick or runny. I will buy cultures and try it out from scratch next time.

The yoghurt maker works very well, but finding a starter is a problem. Most commercial yoghurts contain stabilisers and other additives. Powder starters don't seem to be available in Cape Town, so I eventually used a supermarkets Greek yoghurt. Still looking for a better option. One issue is that the product should have a timer on the lid or front, but doesn't.
