3D Secure is an added layer of security to ensure that all online card transitions in South Africa are safe and secure. It is is mandated by the Card Associations and managed by South African banks.

MasterCard uses a security product called SecureCode. Visa uses a security product call Verified by Visa.

With 3D Secure, your online credit and debit card payment is redirected to your bank’s 3D Secure service (on your bank’s website) to facilitate the authentication process for your online payment. Authentication is done using One Time Pins (OTPs) sent to your mobile phone — either by SMS or as a prompt within your bank's online banking app.
