Tomatillos
Yay! I found Franck Dangereux' book 'Feast at Home' at a little bookshop in Hermanus. One of his recipes has tomatillo as an ingredient. I googled it, as I have never heard of tomatillo before. Seems it is a type of Mexican fruit.
It must be available in Cape Town somewhere. Anyone come across it? Has anyone grown it in the garden? I live in a little village about 1/2 hour away from Hermanus, so no deli's around here!

Tomatillo seeds to buy online :-)
I'm afraid I don't know the answer, but I'm really hoping someone does. We have the same recipe book, and obviously spotted the same recipe :)
My Googling suggested that green tomatoes dressed with some lime juice could be an 'ok' substitute. I used the green tomatoes found in the boxes of heritage tomatoes at Woolies.
Thanks Gina! I didn't look for substitutes when I googled, so very helpful tip.
Now I'm keen to find these things and try and grow them!
Hey Penelope
This article gives a nice breakdown of what it is and also some substitutes you can look at

Thanks for your help Louise! I usually have green peppers in the garden, and tomato season is coming round soon. I'll give it a bash.
