Kitchen Appliance Conundrum
I am in the market for a cake/bread/pasta dough mixing device. I already own a Bamix hand blender and it works wonderfully for making salsas, salad dressings, grinding spices, making pestos, puree-ing soup and chopping small quantities of items. Whipping and whisking cream and that sort of thing is also easy. I cant slice or dice or grate though.
Do I need a food processor or a mixer? What is the best value for money?

Hi Liesl
I agree with Shane, it sounds like you need a processor, and Magimix is THE way to go. I have been using a hand-me-down Magimix for almost 8 years, which my gran used for about 20 years before me. They are quality machines, last long, are easy to clean, and have various useful attachments. I have been eyeing the modern ones, and they are dreamy!
If you are wanting something to mix dough with, then I would recommend a Kitchen Aid mixer. Not only is it a brilliant and trustworthy brand, but they are pretty and come in a variety of colours. You can sometimes pick them up in second hand shops - but you have no warranty on them, and don't know if they were used properly by former owners, so better to buy new.
Both are pricey, but if you consider how long they last, the quality of the machines, they are well worth it! If you want to watch your money, get the processor, and mix and knead the bread by hand (my mom swears that it is better than therapy).
Liesl, it sounds like you need a mixer with a dough hook as an extra attachment.
If you are looking for something that can slice and dice then a processor is what you need. A food processor will work for the occasional baker, but if you are of the serious baker kind, you definitely need to go the mixer route or ideally have both :)
I have a Magimix 5200XL food processor which I would highly recommend. It might seem a bit on the expensive side, but I see it as a long term investment, it will pay for itself over and over again. There are smaller units in the Magimix range as well which might be more suitable.

I have found on this website a large number of Magimix attachments that could be useful to you, if you are interested.
