Rice wine substitute?

Hey guys

I have a recipe for Asian oxtail which I'm dying to try BUT, the recipe calls for either rice wine or sherry. As these are things we don't normally have in the house and something I don't want to go buy specially just for one dish, what can I use as a substitute? (Could I maybe use either port or muscadel as for some reason these are both in my cupboard hehe)

Thanks!

Hi Louise,

Hmm, that is a tough one. From a search around online, I've seen everything from sherry, brandy and gin, to vinegar, wine and sake used to substitute for rice wine. However, since your recipe suggests using either rice wine or sherry, then I would lean to the sweet side of this spectrum and go with either brandy (if you have) or a muscadel. What you're looking for is something that will impart a bit of tang, perhaps a touch of sweetness and an overall depth of flavour.

Good luck, I hope that works (sounds delicious, by the way).

Hey Sigrid

Thanks for the input! I also thought the muscadel might work but never thought of Brandy (which I happen to have at home). I shall keep you posted after the cook out tomorrow and let you know what it was like :)
