Dualit NewGen 4-Slice Toaster, 2200W

You would think that spending this much on a toaster is insanity but place it in comparison to others at the same price point, and this one stands out in terms of practicality, whilst still having a unique appearance. For something that is completely serviceable, all parts are replaceable so this should last a lifetime.

In terms of simplicity, the dial is an actual timer, so "2" means 2 minutes every time. Obviously, the setting required would be slightly different from cold start to pre-heated use but the point is that having an exact reference each time means you can actually find a "magic" number or dial position that always works for a given bread, even if from frozen.

Another unique feature is the ability to check how far the toast is by simply lifting the lever. This means the toasting cycle continues once lowered again unlike other toasters which reset the cycle when ejected, so the amount of time that will pass will vary once the bi-metallic strip (or similar mechanism) is already pre-heated thereby actually requiring adjusting of the number to prevent burning or needing to manually eject it when ready.

It is also handy to be able to leave the toast inside the toaster to keep warm whilst you finish frying your eggs.

I am sure in the future there will be a toaster fully automated to detect the actual level of brownness that will guarantee a perfect toast every time but for the next century or more, this is probably as close as it gets.

NB. Make sure to "season" the toaster as per instructions prior to first use and always select the number of slices so it only heats the slots which are filled with bread, this will avoid burning the bread when the adjacent slot is empty.

There is simply no other toaster on the market today that can compare with my gorgeous Dualit toaster. The best of the best in every single way! And that heavenly smell of toast in the morning....!!!!!

Perfect all over toast. Best toaster I’ve ever had. Not only looks good but has a real industrial and hardy feel to it. I get the feeling this is going to last for years.

I toast rye bread and have found that you need to toast to for 3 minutes and then 1 minute to get it to crunchy on the outside but soft on the inside.

Bad side:
Communication from Dualit SA is poor.
Accessories are not freely available (toasted sandwich baskets and bagel basket) in SA

Note: you have to season the toaster before you use it. Which just means set it to full blast on everything and run it once with no toast. It smokes and cracks and that’s what it is supposed to do. Read more
