Homemade dulce de leche

Traditionally a South American sugary treat, dulce de leche partners well with almost any ice cream, pastry, tart or cake you can think of. In fact, all you really need to enjoy it is a spoon. There are many ways to make this delectable caramel but here is a super easy version. Go on, try it. You won’t be disappointed.



1 can sweetened condensed milk
1 Tbsp sea salt



1. Bring a pot of water to the boil.
2. Place your sealed can of condensed milk into the boiling water for 90 minutes. Make sure the can is completely covered by water the whole time it’s boiling. There are stories of cans exploding and although we haven’t experienced such a caramel explosion ourselves, keeping the can fully submerged in water lowers the chances of this messy business.


3. Remove the can from the water and allow to cool completely before opening.
4. Once cool, add the salt and whisk until smooth.
