Spiced infused craft mulled cider

Mulled cider is a great alternative to mulled wine, bringing winter warmth into your home with this quick and easy hot drink. We’ve thankfully got more and more options of great ciders in South Africa today, and they’re all really good to experiment with. This is the kind of recipe that prides itself on flexibility, so add and subtract what you wish to your own taste preferences. Lemons or your favourite choice of winter citrus can replace oranges, and cider can also be replaced with a fruit juice for an alcohol-free version. Use the spices as a guide – the Jimmy Public range is a fun way to experiment with spices.

Serves: 6–8 | Prep: 15 minutes | Cook: 45 minutes

2 litres cider – we used Everson’s for this recipe
4 cinnamon sticks
4 cloves
2 star anise
1 orange, rind and juice
2 Tbsp brown sugar
200 ml whiskey or bourbon

1. Mix the ingredients together (except for the whiskey) into a small saucepan.
2. Bring it to the boil, then remove from the heat and allow the ingredients to infuse for 10 minutes.
3. Stir in the whisky or bourbon.
Pour into glasses, best to choose the kind you can cup cosily and serve immediately to a thirsty crowd.
