From humble kernel to popped perfection Curl up on the couch with barbecue popcorn

Movies aren’t quite the same without popcorn and popcorn isn’t quite the same without just the right seasoning. So, if you’re getting ready to settle in for an evening on the couch, adorn your bowl of popcorn with this sweet and spicy barbecue popcorn seasoning. Here’s how to make your popcorn pop with flavour.

Ingredients:

  • 1 Tbsp cumin seeds
  • 1 Tbsp cayenne pepper (use less if you don’t like chilli)
  • 2 Tbsp smoked paprika
  • 2 Tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 Tbsp salt
  • 50g butter, melted
  • A handful of rosemary sprigs

Method:

  1. Heat the cumin seeds in a saucepan to toast for a minute or two.
  2. Remove from the heat and grind to a fine powder in a pestle and mortar.
  3. Mix with the remaining spices, sugar, salt, butter and rosemary needles in a large bowl.
  4. Make your popcorn, either on the stove or in a popcorn maker. Whilst the corn is still hot, toss in your bbq spice mix. (If the butter sets, just pop the whole mixture in the microwave to melt again).

You're done — mix well and serve! This somewhat more gourmet popcorn spice mix makes for a great party snack and is perfect for Sunday night movies.
