In 2005 The Buddhist Retreat Centre in Ixopo, South Africa produced a surprise bestseller, Quiet Food: From Slow Food to Quiet Food. A breakaway from convention using black and white photographs, this stunner was followed some six years later by The Cake the Buddha Ate: More Quiet Food.
The BRC, as it is widely known, was voted by CNN as one of the ten best meditation retreat centres in the world. This accolade not only acknowledged its physical beauty and extensive programmes offered by local and international teachers, but also the excellent vegetarian food that has been served there for more than 35 years. And in the wonderful tradition of slow cooking, this year will see the birth of Plentiful: The Big Book of Buddha Food. Taking the vegetarian cuisine of the BRC to new heights, innovative chef, Paul Atkinson, orchestrates the food at the centre with the help of the stalwarts of the kitchen, Lindiwe Ncgobo, Lungi Mbona, Dudu Memela and Nonkanyiso Dlamini. The recipes have a distinctive Mediterranean character – all celebrating healthy, vigorous living.
