The winter food haiku competition

Have you beaten the freeze with some chilli hot chocolate? Has a beefy stew redeemed a wet weekend? Sharpen your pencil and pen a slightly offbeat haiku about a winter food, and you might just get lucky. Ready? And go.

Haiku’s originated in Japan and are the shortest literature form in the world. They have three lines with 5, 7 and 5 syllables respectively and today we are after your Haiku’s about glorious winter food. For example:

Chicken pie you reign;
With your steamy good insides;
Flaky pastry win.

Tasty hot chocolate;
With whipped cream and marshmallows;

Get into my mouth.

Submit your haiku here, on Facebook or tweet it to us (@Yuppiechef #winterhaiku) to join in the fun and stand a chance to win a Yuppiechef kitchen tool hamper worth R500 (and literary fame in our circles). Nice, hey?

Some advice on Haiku writing:

1. Spend a bit of time recalling a special winter food moment, hearty dish or scrumptious pudding
2. Roughly organise your thoughts (set the scene, then expand on it by expressing a feeling, making an observation or recording an action)
3. Polish your Haiku into three lines: 1) five 2) seven and 3) five syllables.

We’ll announce our winners* next week Wednesday so make sure we have your Haiku by midnight on Tuesday 7 August.

幸運, friend (that’s good luck in Japanese).

* Prizes can only be delivered within South Africa and we will need a physical address and contact number to get your goodies to you, so look out for the winner announcement.
