How to make sushi at home

Learning how to make perfect sushi can take years and years of training but if a long sojourn to Japan isn’t on the cards for you, consider the Easy Sushi Maki Roll Maker. This handy tool allows you to create maki rolls in hardly any time at all, all you need is to place your seaweed, rice and fillings inside the maker, pull the film and there you go, a sushi party in a little over a blink.

Making sushi

Ingredients:

For the rice:

250ml sushi rice
375ml water
5ml salt
30ml rice vinegar
30ml sugar

For the filling:

200g fresh tuna, sliced
½ cucumber, peeled, deseeded and sliced thinly lengthways
1 carrot, peeled and sliced thinly lengthways
½ avocado, peeled and sliced thinly lengthways
6 sheets of seaweed

To serve:

Wasabi – you can buy it in paste form or as a powder.
Kikkoman soya sauce
Pickled ginger
Japanese mayonnaise (optional)

Method:

1. Cook and cool your sushi rice. Here is how it is done.
2. Prepare all of your ingredients.
3. On a clean surface, open the Easy Sushi Maki Roll Maker and place the plastic film in position.
4. Place a sheet of Yaki Nori seaweed onto the plastic sheet and then fill both halves of the sushi maker with sushi rice.

5. Place the avocado, cucumber, carrots and tuna horizontally on the nori down the middle of the rice, making sure it’s neat and compact.

6. Close the two halves of the maker together. Brush the edge of nori sticking out with water and then gently pull the plastic film.
7. Open the sushi maker, take the maki roll out and place on a clean counter. Slice into six equal portions using a sharp knife that is slightly wet.
8. Serve with pickled ginger, wasabi, mayonnaise and soya sauce.
