How it works: Gefu Spirelli

Professional kitchens have all sorts of nifty gadgets and people with mad skills so replicating their techniques at home can be a little daunting. Fear not, friends, we’ve got a little something here to help you out. Meet the Gefu Spirelli.

Spirelli

The Gefu Spirelli takes the hassle out of creating julienne strips by turning veggies into long, thin spirals in just a few minutes. Now you can make veggie pasta, spiralled salads, stirfries and more, quickly and easily.

Spirelli how to guide

Here’s how it works:

1. The Spirelli allows you to choose between two widths of spiral cuts (5mm and 3.5mm), depending on which end you choose to feed your veggie through. Cylindrical veggies work best like carrots, marrows and cucumbers but you can also quarter large potatoes lengthwise for some shoestring fries. The larger the veggie the better, as the veggie can get a proper grip inside.

2. Insert the veggie into the chosen end and, using the spiked cap to push the veggie through, mimic the twisting action of sharpening a pencil. Be very careful if you decide to use your bare hands as the blades are super sharp.

3. Twist the veggie through the slicer, letting the spirals fall out. Maintain a firm but even pressure and speed to keep your veggies from breaking in half.

4. Once you have finished twisting your veg, you will be left with a narrow core. Slice it up to add to your dish, dip it in hummus or save it for soup.

And just like that you can enjoy a perfectly spiralled salad or a bowl of veggie pasta Bolognese. Check out this recipe for an easy courgette, edamame and sprout stir-fry.
