Is there a substitute for buttermilk?

The red velvet cupcake recipe asks for buttermilk, but I don't have any in the house and don't want to go to the shop for one item, can I substitute something for it?

Yes, you can add 1 tablespoon of white vinegar or lemon juice to 1 cup of milk. Let it stand for a while and then you can use it in the recipe in place of buttermilk.
